St Cuthbert, Pilbeach Gardens is a typically solid brick Victorian church from the outside. Go within and a range of high quality furnishings greets the eye. These were inspired by the reaction against the mass-produced goods of the Victorian age. The rich woodwork is outclassed by the work of the Arts and Crafts designer, William Bainbridge Reynolds from 1887 onwards. Iron screens to the chancel aisles and organ; niches; saints; royal arms; and a huge rood screen. Best of all are the wide candelabra branches of the lectern in this veritable temple to High Anglicanism. |
